What is ROM Patcher

A ROM patcher is a software tool used to apply a patch file to an original game ROM in order to create a modified version of that game. Instead of distributing full modified ROM files, developers typically release small patch files (such as IPS, BPS, UPS, or XDELTA) that contain only the differences between the original game and the edited version. The ROM patcher combines the patch file with the correct base ROM to generate a new, updated ROM. This method is commonly used for fan translations, bug fixes, quality-of-life improvements, difficulty adjustments, and full ROM hacks. You can patch any Pokemon ROM here. RomPatcher.app provides an easy and convenient way to patch your ROM directly in your browser. Simply select your base ROM and patch file, and the tool will generate your modified ROM instantly — no uploads, no installation, and no complicated setup required.

What it does

Applies a patch file to a base ROM and outputs a new patched ROM, commonly used for translations, bug fixes, and ROM hacks.

Why it’s safe

Everything runs locally in your browser. The site does not receive or store your ROM/patch files.

Tested ROMs

These are fan-made hacks/patches that have been tested with RomPatcher.app. Most patches require a specific base ROM (game + region + revision). If your patch fails, your base ROM likely doesn’t match what the patch expects.

Tip: For best results, use a clean ROM that matches the patch notes (region/revision/header). If available, match the CRC32/MD5/SHA1 listed by the patch author.

How to Patch

1) Select your base ROM file. 2) Select your patch file. 3) (Optional) type an output name. 4) Click Apply patch. When the process finishes, the patched ROM downloads automatically.

Patch Formats

Different communities use different patch formats. Below is a simple explanation of the most common ones you’ll see when patching ROM hacks.

IPS (.ips)
ClassicCommon

IPS is a widely used classic format for retro ROM hacks and translations. It stores byte-level changes and requires the correct base ROM (region/revision) to apply properly.

BPS (.bps)
ModernPopular

BPS is a newer ROM patch format often preferred for hacks because it handles larger patches well and can include better validation than older formats.

UPS (.ups)
DeltaCRC

UPS is a delta patch format that often includes CRC checks for input/output files. It’s commonly used in some console ROM hacking scenes for integrity verification.

PPF (.ppf)
Disc ImagesLegacy

PPF (PlayStation Patch Format) is often used for disc-based patching workflows. You may see it for older console mods and certain disc image patch releases.

XDELTA / VCDIFF (.xdelta / .vcdiff)
LargeEfficient

XDELTA (VCDIFF) is a powerful binary-diff format suitable for larger changes and bigger files. It’s common for large projects where distributing full files isn’t allowed or practical.

FAQ

Do you upload my ROM or patch to a server?

No. Patching runs locally in your browser. Your files stay on your device.

Why does a patch fail to apply?

Usually the base ROM does not match what the patch expects (region, revision, or header). Use a clean ROM that matches the patch notes.

Can I choose the output file name?

Yes. Use the Output file name box before patching. If left empty, RomPatcher.app will use an automatic file name.

Should I choose a patch type?

Auto-detect is recommended. Choose a type only if you want the file picker filtered or you know the exact format.

Which patch types are supported?

Common formats include IPS, BPS, UPS, PPF, and XDELTA/VCDIFF. Exact support depends on the RomPatcher.js build being used.
